The Big Lonely offers multiple upland hunting options, customizable to meet the expectations of novice and advanced sportsmen and women.  Our natural habitat and varied terrain provide an exciting alternative to the average, manicured upland preserve experience.  Come discover a memorable hunting experience with ample opportunity to harvest quail, chukar and pheasant while paying homage to the challenge of wild bird hunting. Each hunter at The Big Lonely an opportunity to warm up on our practice 5 stand course before heading to the field. Expert instruction from NSCA certified instructors is available if desired.

  • Upland Hunts: September 15 – March 30
  • Guided Spring Gobbler Hunts: April 11 – May 16
  • Visibility: Blaze orange hat and vest are required. Communicate your position frequently while moving through cover.
  • Dog Safety: Always confirm a dog’s location before taking any shot.
  • Shotgun Safety: Unload when waiting for a dog to point or when crossing obstacles; maintain muzzle awareness at all times.
    Gun Handling: Keep muzzles pointed skyward; only shoot low-flying birds when you know the location of all dogs and partners.

Spring Turkey Adventures at The Big Lonely

In addition to upland hunts, we offer guided spring gobbler hunts from mid-April through mid-May. The experience of chasing gobblers in the Allegheny mountains is challenging and rewarding. In addition to The Big Lonely’s 3,200+ acres, we have access to over  2,000 acres of additional farmland and National Forest in Highland County and Bath County, Virginia, ensuring a high success rate of finding turkeys.

Five Stand Practice Facility

Every upland hunt at The Big Lonely Preserve includes a complimentary 25 shot warm-up session on our Five-Stand practice facility. Those who want to spend a little extra time sharpening their shooting skills can book a private lesson with our NSCA certified instructor.

Accommodations

The Big Lonely offers lodging for hunters in a newly renovated cabin located right on the ranch. This comfortable, private, rustic cabin includes a full wraparound porch, a working fireplace, three bedrooms, and one full bath. It’s the perfect place to relax after a day in the field—swapping stories from the hunt, enjoying a good meal and a drink, and unwinding to the quiet of the mountains, the occasional horse whinny, and the seasonal running stream. Hunters are invited to stay and fully experience the beauty, solitude, and adventure The Big Lonely Preserve has to offer.
